Whiskey Sour
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 1 drink 1x
Description
Whiskey sour with lemon and simple syrup. From Olivia at Flavors.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces (60ml) bourbon
- 1 ounce (30ml) fresh lemon juice
- 3/4 ounce (22ml) simple syrup
- 1 egg white, optional, for foam
- Ice
- Lemon twist or cherry, for garnish
Instructions
- Add bourbon, lemon, syrup, and egg white if using to a shaker. Shake 15 seconds without ice if you want foam.
- Add ice and shake hard until the tin is frosty.
- Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice, or up into a coupe if you used the egg white.
- Garnish with a lemon twist.
Notes
Bottled lemon juice tastes flat. Fresh lemon is the drink. Skip the egg white if you do not want foam. Use a pasteurized white if you do.

Sour, not a margarita
A margarita is tequila and lime. This is whiskey and lemon.
Substitutions
Rye is drier than bourbon. Either is a whiskey sour. Simple syrup is equal parts sugar and water, dissolved.
Mistakes to avoid
A short shake leaves it warm and harsh. Shake until the tin hurts your hand.
Storage
Shake each drink to order. Lemon juice holds a day in the fridge.
Nutrition (estimated)
About 180 calories without the egg white. Estimate only, not a lab test.
FAQ
Do I need egg white?
No. It adds foam and a softer sip. The sour is complete without it.
Bourbon or rye?
Bourbon is rounder. Rye is spicier. Both are correct.
Can I use sour mix?
That is a bottled shortcut. This page is lemon and syrup.
How sweet?
Three-quarter ounce syrup is the balance. Add a teaspoon more if the lemon is sharp.
