Butter
Soft enough to spread. Melted butter runs off the loaf and pools on the sheet.
Garlic
Grated, so it disappears. Chunks burn.
Loaf
A crusty one. Sandwich bread goes limp.
Serve
Cut after baking so the butter stays on the crumb.

FAQ
Powder instead of fresh garlic?
A half teaspoon of powder. It is flatter.
Cheese?
A handful of mozzarella in the last 3 minutes, if you want it. The base recipe is butter and garlic.
Broil?
Only for a minute at the end if the top is pale. Broiling from the start scorches the garlic.
Ahead?
The garlic butter keeps 3 days in the fridge. Spread it just before baking.
