Description

Sloppy joes with ground beef and tomato sauce. From Olivia at Flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 1/2 pounds (680g) ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup (240ml) tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 6 soft hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Cook onion and pepper in oil until soft. Add garlic 30 seconds.
  2. Add beef, salt, and pepper. Brown and drain extra fat.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire, mustard, and vinegar. Simmer 10 minutes until thick enough to sit on a bun.
  4. Spoon onto toasted buns. Serve with pickles.

Notes

The sauce should mound, not run. If it is loose, simmer uncovered a few minutes more.

Sandwiches, not chili

Chili is a bowl. This is a thicker sauce meant for a bun.

Substitutions

Ground turkey works. Add a teaspoon of oil if it is very lean.

Mistakes to avoid

Skipping the drain leaves a greasy sauce that slides off the bun.

Storage

Refrigerate the meat 4 days. Toast fresh buns when you reheat.

Nutrition (estimated)

About 460 calories per sandwich. Estimate only, not a lab test.

FAQ

Can I use a seasoning packet?

You can, and this page is the from-scratch pan instead.

How thick should it be?

A spoonful should stay on the bun for the walk to the table.

Freeze it?

Yes, the meat sauce freezes for 3 months. Buns do not.

What side fits?

Creamy coleslaw or potato salad, both already on Flavors.
